Uit eerder onderzoek is gebleken dat de toename van resistente bacteriën niet komt door verspreiding van deze bacteriën van dier naar mens. Het kan zijn dat niet de bacteriën zelf, maar alleen de stukjes DNA uit die bacteriën worden overgedragen die zorgen voor het resistent worden. Doel: In dit project is onderzocht hoe antibioticaresistentie zich op DNA-niveau kan verspreiden tussen bacteriën. En of plasmideverspreiding hieraan bijdraagt. Werkwijze: In het eerdere ‘i-4-1-Health’-project zijn 450 resistente bacteriën verzameld bij mensen en dieren. Deze bacteriën zijn met nieuwe DNA-analysetechnieken ontleed. Dit onderzoek laat zien hoe antibioticaresistentie zich verspreidt tussen verschillende bacteriën en tussen mens en dier. Daarna kunnen manieren worden ontwikkeld om deze verspreiding te voorkomen. Resultaten: De 450 resistente bacteriën verzameld in het i-4-1-health-project toonde eerder slechts een beperkte verspreiding van antibioticaresistente bacteriën tussen mens en dier aan. Nieuwe DNA-analysetechnieken toonden aan dat de 450 resistente bacteriën 1139 plasmiden bevatten, waarbij 9 plasmideclusters werden geïdentificeerd in zowel mens als dier, sommige met virulentiegenen. De grootte en diversiteit van plasmiden waren opmerkelijk, met specifieke menselijke en dierlijke varianten. Deze bevindingen benadrukken het belang van plasmiden in de verspreiding van antibioticaresistentie.
