De genen verantwoordelijk voor deze resistentie worden uitbundig gedeeld tussen bacteriën. Deze antibioticaresistentiegenen verspreiden zich door wereldwijde verplaatsing van mensen, goederen en dieren. Ook in Nederland.Doel Het doel van dit project was de verspreiding van antibioticaresistentiegenen in kaart te brengen. Dit helpt om betere controlemaatregelen te ontwikkelen om de spreiding van resistentie te minimaliseren.Werkwijze Onderzoekers hebben een supersnelle computercode geschreven die het mogelijk maakt om DNA van 6.000 Nederlandse bacteriën te vergelijken met dat van een half miljoen bacteriën wereldwijd. Dat is alle DNA-data die op dat moment openbaar beschikbaar was. Informatie over deze bacteriën, zoals herkomstland en gastheer, is vaak niet gestandaardiseerd en bevat fouten. Om dit op te lossen, gebruikten de onderzoekers kunstmatige intelligentie om deze gegevens te standaardiseren. Daarna konden ze kijken waar 15.000 Nederlandse resistentiegenen op andere plekken in de wereld voorkomen. Resultaten: De resultaten verschillen sterk per type resistentiegen. De onderzoekers zagen vooral verbanden met China, de Verenigde Staten, Taiwan, Italië en Denemarken. Dit komt deels doordat deze landen veel DNA-onderzoek doen, en er dus veel data uit die landen beschikbaar is. Om deze verbanden beter te begrijpen, passen de onderzoekers geavanceerde statistische methoden toe.
